How Do You Figure Out The Tonnage Of Your AC(s)?

Find your AC’s model number (M/N), located on the outside of the appliance. Typically, the model number is a sequence of numbers and letters.

In that sequence, you should see an even, two-digit number that’s divisible by 12.

Simply add three zeroes to that number to know the BTU rating of your AC.  And, divide that same two-digit number by 12 to get the tonnage.

Example:

  • If your AC unit shows this model number of 10ACB42-1P… 42 would be the even number larger than 12, and divisible by it.
  • 42 divided by 12 = 3.5
  • So, your AC provides 3.5 tons of cooling.
